Sensitization is a biological process where an organism becomes more responsive to a particular stimulus after repeated exposure to it. This increased responsiveness can manifest in various ways depending on the context, such as heightened physical reactions, learned behaviors, or increased emotional sensitivity. In immunology, sensitization refers to the development of an allergic response. Initially, the immune system may not react to a foreign substance, known as an allergen. However, upon subsequent exposures, the immune system becomes primed to recognize this allergen and mounts an exaggerated defense, leading to allergic symptoms. This can involve the production of specific antibodies like IgE, which trigger the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators.
