semiquarter

A semiquarter is a term sometimes used to denote one-eighth of a whole, effectively the half of a quarter. It is not an officially recognized unit in any standard system and appears mainly in discussions of fractional subdivision or as a hypothetical naming convention.

Etymology and scope: The name combines semi- (half) with quarter (one fourth). In educational contexts, semiquarter is sometimes introduced as a convenient label for halves of quarters to help illustrate fractions. In discussion of currency, some speculative proposals have used the label informally to describe a 12.5-cent unit, but such usage is anecdotal and not adopted by monetary authorities.

Geometric interpretation: In circle geometry, a semiquarter can describe a sector that is one eighth of the circle, corresponding to a central angle of 45 degrees. For a circle of radius r, the sector area equals (1/2) r^2 θ with θ = π/4, giving an area of π r^2 / 8. The arc length of that sector is r θ = π r / 4, and the chord length is 2 r sin(π/8). These relationships align with the idea that a semiquarter is one eighth of a whole circle.

Usage and status: There is no formal standard, and semiquarter remains a nonstandard, context-dependent term. It may appear in teaching materials or speculative discussions but does not replace established terms such as eighth, quarter, or octant in formal mathematics or currency nomenclature.
