Semilunar valves, also known as aortic and pulmonary valves, are critical components of the heart's pumping mechanism. They are located between the ventricles and the major arteries, the aorta and pulmonary trunk, respectively. The aortic valve is situated between the left ventricle and the aorta, while the pulmonary valve is between the right ventricle and the pulmonary trunk.

These valves are composed of three leaflets each, which open and close in response to the pressure changes within the heart chambers. During ventricular systole, when the ventricles contract, the pressure within them increases, causing the semilunar valves to open. This allows blood to be ejected into the aorta and pulmonary trunk, respectively. During ventricular diastole, when the ventricles relax, the pressure within them decreases, causing the semilunar valves to close, preventing backflow of blood into the ventricles.

Semilunar valves are essential for maintaining the direction of blood flow within the heart and the rest of the circulatory system. They play a crucial role in the heart's pumping action, ensuring that blood is efficiently propelled from the heart to the rest of the body. Any dysfunction or damage to these valves can lead to serious cardiovascular conditions, such as aortic stenosis or regurgitation.
