Self-leveling refers to a class of flooring systems known as self-leveling compounds (SLCs). These cementitious or polymer-modified mixtures are designed to flow under gravity to create a smooth, flat base for subsequent coverings. They are used to correct uneven subfloors, fill minor cracks, and produce a uniform surface before installing tiles, vinyl, carpet, or finished wood.

Most SLCs are cement-based with added polymers to enhance flow, adhesion, and shrinkage control. Some formulations are epoxy- or polyurethane-based for chemical resistance or faster curing. When mixed with the specified amount of water or premixed liquid, the product becomes a low-viscosity slurry that seeks its own level. Substrate preparation is critical: the floor must be clean, dry, free of dust and oil, and structurally sound. Cracks should be repaired, joints treated, and a primer or bonding agent applied as recommended. Moisture barriers may be required over concrete in damp conditions.

Application typically involves mixing in batches, then pouring or pumping onto the prepared surface and allowing the material to flow and level itself. A gauge rake or squeegee helps spread the material, and a spiked roller helps release entrapped air. The layer is usually applied in thin sections, with curing times specified by the manufacturer before the next layer or finish is installed. Limitations include sensitivity to substrate movement, exterior use restrictions, and the need to avoid traffic and heavy loads until fully cured.
