The purpose of the sekundærsløyfen is to distribute or regulate the heat or cooling to individual zones or units within a building or network.

In a typical district heating setup, a primary pipe network delivers hot water from a central power plant or boiler to individual buildings. Each building then has a sekundærsløyfen. This secondary loop takes heat from the primary loop, often through a heat exchanger, and then circulates it through a separate system of pipes within the building to radiators or underfloor heating. This allows for lower operating temperatures and pressures within the building itself, which is safer and more efficient.

Similarly, in district cooling systems, the primary loop delivers chilled water.
