Sekundäärijohtimet refers to secondary conductors in electrical systems. These are conductive elements that are not part of the primary current-carrying circuit but are intentionally connected to ensure safety. The most common example of a secondary conductor is the ground wire, also known as an earth wire, in a typical household electrical installation.

The primary function of secondary conductors is to provide a safe path for electricity to flow in the event of a fault. If a live wire accidentally touches a metal casing of an appliance or equipment, the casing becomes energized. Without a secondary conductor, anyone touching the casing could receive a dangerous electric shock. However, if the casing is properly connected to the ground wire, the fault current will flow through the secondary conductor to the earth. This large current will typically trip a circuit breaker or blow a fuse, disconnecting the power supply and preventing harm.

In addition to grounding, secondary conductors can also be used for equipotential bonding. This involves connecting different conductive parts of a building or electrical system together to ensure they are all at the same electrical potential. This is particularly important in areas with a risk of lightning strikes or in environments where there is a higher risk of electrical faults, such as in bathrooms or kitchens. By equalizing potentials, the risk of dangerous voltage differences between conductive surfaces is minimized. Therefore, secondary conductors are a crucial safety feature in modern electrical installations, protecting people and property from electrical hazards.
