A seigneur, also known as a lord, was a feudal lord, a person who held feudal tenure of land granted from a higher authority, such as the king. In return for the land, the seigneur owed certain duties and services to his superior. The seigneur in turn granted land to vassals, who were themselves obliged to perform services for the seigneur. This system, known as feudalism, was prevalent in medieval Europe.

Seigneurs held significant power within their territories, which were often called fiefs or manors. They had the right to administer justice, collect taxes and tolls, and even raise their own private armies. Peasants living on the seigneur's land, known as serfs, were bound to the land and owed labor, rent, and other dues to the seigneur. While serfs were not enslaved, their freedom was severely restricted.

The responsibilities of a seigneur extended beyond mere control of land and people. They were expected to provide protection to their vassals and serfs, and to fulfill military obligations to their liege lord. The relationship between a seigneur and his vassals was based on a complex web of loyalty, obligation, and mutual dependency. The power and influence of seigneurs gradually waned with the rise of centralized monarchies and the decline of feudalism.
