A seigneur, also known as a lord, was a feudal lord, a person who held feudal tenure of land granted from a higher authority, such as the king. In return for the land, the seigneur owed certain duties and services to his superior. The seigneur in turn granted land to vassals, who were themselves obliged to perform services for the seigneur.
