Sequoyah was a Native American silversmith, the originator of the Cherokee syllabary, and leader of the Cherokee transplantation to Indian Territory in the 19th century. He was a prominent figure in Cherokee culture and history, known for his linguistic and leadership skills.

Sequoyah was born around 1770 in the Overhill Cherokee territory, now part of what is eastern Tennessee. He spent much of his life within the Cherokee community, learning their traditions and acquiring his silversmithing skills. However, in the early 19th century, Sequoyah began to experiment with written records of the Cherokee language. He created a syllabary that represented sounds in the language, instead of letters. This allowed individuals unfamiliar with the Roman alphabet to pronounce Cherokee words, facilitating communication and education.

Sequoyah's work on the Cherokee syllabary involved reducing the complexity of spoken language into a symbolic form that allowed for reading. The syllabary consisted of approximately 85 characters, eliminating the necessity to understand each word as comprising specific letters and their sounds. This was notably distinct from other written systems that were previously used by Europeans and their colonies. When a year following completion of his script, the syllabary was first introduced, Sequoyah presented it the Cherokee from which point it became widespread within the native group.

Sequoyah's work had significant implications for the development of the Cherokee people. Prior to the establishment of literacy through his syllabary, the ability to write in their own tongue improved opportunities for the Cherokee in education and knowledge.
