Common practice uses schemas from schema.org, Dublin Core, or industry-specific vocabularies to describe episodes and segments, including topics, language, rights, and accessibility. Implementations usually store timing, lineage, and relationships to enable non-linear playback and targeted advertising.

Applications include streaming platforms, podcasts, and educational services to improve navigation, bookmarking, and ad insertion. The model enables segment-level analytics, content reuse across episodes or series, and dynamic ads that target specific segments.

Challenges involve aligning segment boundaries, maintaining consistent playback across devices, and managing licensing for individual segments. Effective use requires robust data models and tooling to author, index, validate segments and episodes, plus clear editorial guidelines for narrative coherence.
