Seawatercooled refers to systems and equipment that utilize seawater as a cooling medium. This is a common practice in industries operating near or on the coast, particularly in maritime applications such as ships, submarines, and offshore platforms. Power plants, especially those located on coastlines, also frequently employ seawater cooling for their condensers.

The primary advantage of using seawater for cooling is its readily available and virtually inexhaustible supply in coastal and marine environments. This eliminates the need for large freshwater reservoirs or extensive plumbing systems that would be required if freshwater were used exclusively. Seawater cooling systems typically involve drawing in seawater, circulating it through heat exchangers to absorb heat generated by machinery or processes, and then discharging the warmed seawater back into the sea.

However, seawater is a highly corrosive medium due to its salt content and the presence of dissolved oxygen and other minerals. This necessitates the use of specialized materials, such as corrosion-resistant alloys or coatings, for pipes, pumps, and heat exchangers. Biofouling, the accumulation of marine organisms on submerged surfaces, is another significant challenge. Organisms like barnacles, algae, and mussels can impede water flow, reduce heat transfer efficiency, and damage equipment. Regular cleaning and the implementation of anti-fouling strategies are therefore crucial for maintaining the effectiveness and longevity of seawater-cooled systems.
