Scintillaationa is a theoretical phenomenon in luminescence science proposed to describe a rapid modulation of photon emission within a scintillation event caused by ionizing radiation. It refers to bursts of light occurring at irregular intervals during the decay of excited states, yielding a non-monotonic emission profile, in contrast to conventional scintillation, which typically shows a smooth decay.

The term scintillaationa combines scintilla (a spark) with a suffix implying process; it originated in speculative discussions of scintillator dynamics and is not yet standardized across the literature.

Proposed mechanisms include trap-assisted recombination on sub-microscale timescales during charge transport, microcavity effects within the crystal lattice, or artifacts from pulsed excitation. Scintillaationa would be distinguished from afterglow by its internal temporal structure within a single light pulse.

Detection relies on time-resolved photon counting and fast electronics such as time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC), high-rate scintillation detectors, and spectral analysis. As of now, evidence for scintillaationa is inconclusive, and replication of results is needed to establish whether the effect is real.
