Schutzkontakt, or protective earth contact, is the electrical connection that bonds exposed conductive parts of equipment to the earth. It is part of the protective conductor system and provides a low-impedance path for fault currents, enabling protective devices to interrupt the circuit and reducing the risk of electric shock.

In household plugs and outlets, Schutzkontakt is implemented differently across European systems. The common German-style Schuko system (Type F) uses two live and neutral pins for current, with two metal strips on the socket that engage corresponding contacts on the plug to form the protective earth connection. The French system (Type E) uses a central earth pin in the socket. Many modern plugs combine both arrangements (the CEE 7/7 plug), allowing compatibility with both Type E and Type F sockets.

Standards and terminology: Schutzkontakt is the term used in German-speaking contexts for the protective earth contact. It corresponds to the broader protective earth concept in IEC and EN standards and is connected to the building’s grounding system, the appliance’s earth terminal, and the network’s earth.

Safety and usage: The protective earth reduces the risk of electric shock in case of insulation failure or exposed-metal parts becoming live. It also supports the operation of protective devices such as fuses and residual current devices. Schutzkontakt is a safety feature, not a substitute for proper insulation or correct wiring practices.
