A safety lamp is a type of lamp designed to minimize the risk of igniting flammable atmospheres. These lamps are essential in environments where explosive gases, such as methane in coal mines, might be present. The primary principle behind most safety lamps is to contain any flame produced by the lamp, preventing it from escaping and igniting external gases.

The most well-known type of safety lamp is the Davy lamp, invented by Sir Humphry Davy in 1815. It uses a fine wire gauze surrounding the flame. When a flammable gas comes into contact with the flame inside the gauze, the heat of the flame is conducted away by the gauze so rapidly that it prevents the gas outside the lamp from being ignited. Other designs, like the Mueseler lamp, employ a chimney to direct airflow and a metal cone to extinguish the flame if the oxygen level drops too low or the gas concentration becomes too high.

Modern safety lamps often utilize battery-powered electric lights, which eliminate the open flame altogether, offering a higher level of safety. However, the historical wire-gauze lamp remains a significant invention in mining history, dramatically reducing the incidence of devastating mine explosions. The design principles of early safety lamps continue to influence the development of safety equipment in hazardous environments.
