Synapsikohtade, known more commonly as synapses, are fundamental structures in the nervous system responsible for transmitting information from one neuron to another. These specialized junctions allow communication between nerve cells, enabling the complex processes of thought, sensation, and movement. A synapse typically consists of a presynaptic terminal, a synaptic cleft, and a postsynaptic membrane.

When an electrical signal, an action potential, arrives at the presynaptic terminal of a neuron, it triggers the release of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft, the small gap between the two neurons. They then bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic membrane of the receiving neuron. This binding can either excite or inhibit the postsynaptic neuron, influencing whether it will generate its own action potential.

There are two main types of synapses: chemical synapses and electrical synapses. Chemical synapses, the most prevalent, rely on neurotransmitters for signal transmission. Electrical synapses, while less common, allow for direct ion flow between neurons through gap junctions, resulting in faster but less modifiable signal transmission. The precise functioning and regulation of synapses are crucial for learning, memory, and overall brain health.
