Sähköstatiivinen refers to phenomena related to static electricity. Static electricity is a buildup of electric charge on the surface of an object. This buildup occurs when there is an imbalance of electric charges, either an excess or deficiency of electrons. The charge remains in one place, or "static," until it can move away through an electric current or electrical discharge.

This charge separation typically happens through contact and separation (triboelectric effect), or through electrostatic induction. When two different materials come into contact, electrons can be transferred from one material to the other. If the materials are then separated, one will have a net positive charge and the other a net negative charge. This phenomenon is commonly observed when a balloon is rubbed against hair, causing the balloon to stick to a wall due to the induced charge.

Discharge occurs when the accumulated static electricity is suddenly released. This can manifest as a visible spark, a crackling sound, or even a mild shock. Examples include the static shock experienced when touching a doorknob after walking across a carpet, or the lightning that occurs during a thunderstorm, which is a large-scale electrostatic discharge.
