A sähkögeneraattoriin, or electric generator, is a device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. This conversion is typically achieved through the principle of electromagnetic induction, discovered by Michael Faraday. In essence, a generator consists of a magnetic field and an armature, which is a coil of wire. When the armature rotates within the magnetic field, or when the magnetic field rotates around a stationary armature, a voltage is induced across the coil. This induced voltage drives an electric current.

The mechanical energy required to rotate the armature or the magnetic field can come from various sources. Common sources include steam turbines powered by burning fossil fuels, nuclear reactions, or natural forces like wind and water. In smaller applications, internal combustion engines or even hand cranks can provide the necessary mechanical input. The generated electricity can be direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC), depending on the design of the generator, specifically whether a commutator or slip rings are used. AC generators are far more common for large-scale power generation and distribution due to the ease of transforming AC voltage. Generators are fundamental components of modern power grids, providing electricity for homes, industries, and transportation. They are also essential for backup power systems and portable electricity needs.
