A röntgenaparaat, or X-ray machine, is a medical imaging device used to produce X-rays, a form of electromagnetic radiation. These rays pass through the body and are absorbed to varying degrees by different tissues, creating an image on a detector. Dense materials like bone absorb X-rays more strongly than soft tissues, resulting in a contrast that allows for visualization of internal structures.

The primary components of a röntgenaparaat include an X-ray tube, which generates the X-rays, and a power supply to energize the tube. The X-ray tube consists of a cathode that emits electrons when heated and an anode that is struck by these electrons, producing X-rays. The intensity and energy of the X-rays can be controlled by adjusting the voltage and current supplied to the tube.

Röntgenaparaaten are essential diagnostic tools in modern medicine, widely used for detecting fractures, identifying foreign objects, diagnosing lung conditions like pneumonia, and examining teeth. They are also employed in certain therapeutic applications. While beneficial, X-ray radiation carries a risk of cellular damage, so exposure is minimized and controlled by trained professionals, adhering to strict safety protocols. Modern machines often incorporate digital detectors, replacing older film-based systems for faster image acquisition and processing.
