Rótarfyllingar, also known as root canal treatment, is a dental procedure designed to save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. The process involves removing the damaged or infected pulp from the inside of the tooth. The pulp is a soft tissue containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.

When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause pain and lead to the formation of an abscess. Without treatment, the infection can spread, potentially leading to tooth loss. Rótarfyllingar aims to alleviate this pain and prevent further complications.

The procedure typically involves several steps. First, the dentist or endodontist numbs the area around the tooth. An opening is then made in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed using small instruments. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned, disinfected, and shaped. Finally, the empty space is filled with a biocompatible material, usually a rubber-like substance called gutta-percha, and sealed with cement. A temporary or permanent filling is placed on top.

Following a rótarfylling, the tooth is no longer vital as the nerve has been removed, but it can still function normally. Often, a crown is recommended to protect the treated tooth from fracture, as it can become more brittle after the procedure. Maintaining good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, is crucial for the long-term success of a rótarfylling.
