A távcső, often referred to as a telescope in English, is an optical instrument designed to view distant objects. It works by collecting and focusing electromagnetic radiation, such as visible light, allowing us to see objects that are too far away or too faint to be observed with the naked eye. The primary component of a telescope is its objective, which is either a lens (in a refractor telescope) or a mirror (in a reflector telescope). This objective gathers light and creates a focused image.

Telescopes come in various forms, with the most common being optical telescopes. These are further categorized into refractors, which use lenses to bend light, and reflectors, which use mirrors. Refractors are typically smaller and used for terrestrial viewing or basic astronomical observation, while reflectors, especially large ones, are essential for deep-sky astronomical research due to their ability to collect more light and achieve higher magnifications without the chromatic aberration issues that can affect refractors.

Beyond optical telescopes, there are also non-optical telescopes that detect other forms of electromagnetic radiation, such as radio telescopes, X-ray telescopes, and infrared telescopes. These instruments are crucial for studying various astronomical phenomena that are not visible in the optical spectrum. The development and advancement of telescopes have been pivotal in expanding our understanding of the universe, from the discovery of planets in our solar system to the observation of distant galaxies and the cosmic microwave background radiation.
