Roolivõimendus is the Estonian term for power steering. It is a system that assists the driver in turning the steering wheel, making it easier to maneuver a vehicle, especially at low speeds or when parking. The primary function of a power steering system is to reduce the physical effort required to steer, thereby improving driver comfort and control.

There are several types of power steering systems. The oldest and simplest is hydraulic power steering. This system uses a pump, driven by the engine, to pressurize hydraulic fluid. When the driver turns the steering wheel, a control valve directs this pressurized fluid to either side of a hydraulic cylinder, which then assists in turning the wheels.

Another common type is electric power steering (EPS). In EPS, an electric motor is used to provide the steering assistance. This system offers several advantages over hydraulic systems, including better fuel efficiency as it only consumes energy when assistance is needed, and it allows for more sophisticated features like variable assist, where the amount of assistance changes depending on vehicle speed.

Electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) is a hybrid system that combines elements of both hydraulic and electric power steering. It uses an electric motor to drive the hydraulic pump, offering some of the benefits of both systems.

The presence and effectiveness of a power steering system are crucial for safe and comfortable driving. A properly functioning power steering system provides responsive steering and helps prevent driver fatigue, particularly on longer journeys or in situations requiring frequent maneuvering.
