The rollback phase involves undoing any transactions that were in progress but not yet committed when the failure occurred. This ensures that the database does not contain partially completed operations, which could lead to data corruption. Database systems typically maintain transaction logs that record all changes. During rollback, the system reads these logs in reverse order and applies the inverse of the logged operations to revert the database to its state before the uncommitted transactions began.

Following the rollback phase, the rollforward phase is executed. This stage involves reapplying committed transactions that occurred after the last consistent backup or checkpoint. The transaction logs are read forward, and the logged operations are applied to the database to bring it up to the desired point in time. This allows for recovery to the most recent committed state, minimizing data loss.
