The cooperative was formed by a group of local vintners in the mid-20th century to market their wines collectively. The brand's flagship product is Riunite Lambrusco, a red, semi-sparkling wine made primarily from Lambrusco grapes grown in the Modena and Reggio Emilia areas.

Riunite achieved broad international distribution and became one of Italy's best-known wine brands in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. Its marketing emphasized approachability and value, and the advertising campaign featuring the slogan "Riunite on Ice" helped define a perception of Italian wine as easy to drink when chilled.
