Ristikkäistyminen is a Finnish term that translates to "crossing over" or "chiasma formation" in English. It refers to a biological process that occurs during meiosis, a type of cell division essential for sexual reproduction. Specifically, it happens during prophase I of meiosis, when homologous chromosomes, which are pairs of chromosomes carrying the same genes, pair up.

During this pairing, a crucial event called synapsis takes place, where the homologous chromosomes align closely. Following synapsis, segments of the DNA on non-sister chromatids (one chromatid from each homologous chromosome) can be exchanged. This exchange of genetic material is known as crossing over. The points where the exchange occurs are called chiasmata (singular: chiasma). These chiasmata are physically visible as X-shaped structures under a microscope and serve to hold the homologous chromosomes together until anaphase I.

The significance of ristikkäistyminen lies in its role in genetic recombination. By shuffling alleles (different versions of a gene) between homologous chromosomes, crossing over creates new combinations of genes in the resulting gametes (sperm and egg cells). This genetic variation is fundamental for the evolution of species, as it increases the diversity of offspring and provides a wider range of traits for natural selection to act upon. Without ristikkäistyminen, offspring would inherit chromosomes identical to their parents, severely limiting genetic diversity.
