Ringåpningen refers to the first mass return of Central European coal miners to the surface following the end of World War II. The event, which took place on the 8th of May 1945, marked a poignant moment in the history of post-war Europe. As Allied forces swept through Germany and Austria, many coal miners from the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine found themselves cut off from their families and homes, having been relocated to the German territories for labor.

When Allied forces entered the region, they discovered thousands of coal miners, some as young as 15, who had been transported from the Donbas region to Germany for forced labor. Many of these miners had formed close bonds with the local community, but their families and homes lay thousands of kilometers away. Ringåpningen was a remarkable event, with miners making the grueling journey back to the Donbas region, either voluntarily or through aid from the Allied forces.
