Riksrevisjonen, the Office of the Auditor General of Norway, is Norway’s supreme auditing institution (SAI). It functions as an independent government agency whose mandate is to audit the central government's use of public resources to promote accountability, transparency and proper management of funds. The office operates independently of the government and reports directly to the Storting (the Norwegian Parliament). The Riksrevisor, its head, is appointed by the Storting and serves a fixed term.

The office conducts three main types of work: financial audits of the central government's accounts to verify accuracy and legality; performance audits that assess economy, efficiency and effectiveness in the use of resources; and compliance audits to ensure laws, regulations and policies are followed. It may also undertake targeted or special investigations in response to specific events or concerns.

Riksrevisjonen publishes annual audit reports and special reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations. The Parliament, government agencies and the wider public use these reports to strengthen governance and public administration. To support its work, the office adheres to professional auditing standards and participates in international networks for SAIs, such as INTOSAI.

Legal basis and oversight: The office operates under the Norwegian Constitution and the Riksrevisjonsloven (Audit Act). Its independence from the executive branch is central to its mandate. The Riksrevisjonen is headquartered in Oslo and employs auditors and specialists in auditing, accounting and related disciplines.
