riftassociated refers to phenomena, geological features, or processes that are directly linked to or a consequence of tectonic rifting. Tectonic rifting is the process by which a continental plate or oceanic plate is stretched and thinned, eventually leading to the formation of new plate boundaries. This stretching weakens the lithosphere, causing it to fracture and subside.

Key riftassociated features include rift valleys, which are elongated depressions that form as the crust drops down between parallel fault lines. Along the edges of these valleys, fault scarps are common, representing the steep slopes created by the movement of tectonic blocks. Volcanic activity is frequently riftassociated, as the thinning of the lithosphere allows magma to rise to the surface more easily. This can result in fissure eruptions and the formation of basaltic lava flows.

The presence of large bodies of water, such as lakes or seas, can also be riftassociated. As rift valleys deepen, they can fill with water, forming rift lakes. In a more advanced stage of rifting, when the continental crust has fully separated, a new ocean basin can begin to form, characterized by oceanic crust and mid-ocean ridges. The distribution of earthquakes is another significant riftassociated characteristic, as the fracturing and movement of crustal blocks generate seismic activity. Sedimentary basins also develop within rift zones, accumulating sediments eroded from the surrounding elevated areas.
