Ridskatt is a Swedish term that translates to "horse tax" or "equestrian tax". Historically, it referred to a tax levied on horses, often used to fund public services or military conscription. The specific purpose and application of ridskatt varied significantly over time and across different regions of Sweden.

In medieval times, the ridskatt was primarily a military obligation. Those who owned horses were expected to contribute to the king's military needs, either by providing horses for service or by paying a tax that would fund the upkeep of cavalry. This tax was an important source of revenue for the crown and played a role in maintaining the kingdom's defense capabilities.

As Sweden evolved, so did the concept of taxation. While direct ridskatt in its original military form largely disappeared, the idea of taxing property or activities related to equestrianism persisted in various guises.
