Retseptorirakkude, often translated as receptor cells, are specialized cells in multicellular organisms responsible for detecting specific stimuli from the internal or external environment and converting them into signals that can be interpreted by the nervous system. These cells are the first step in the process of sensation, allowing organisms to perceive and respond to changes around and within them.

There are various types of receptor cells, each sensitive to a particular kind of stimulus. Photoreceptor cells, found in the eyes, detect light. Mechanoreceptor cells respond to mechanical pressure or distortion, such as touch, sound vibrations, and changes in blood pressure. Chemoreceptor cells are sensitive to chemical stimuli, responsible for taste and smell, as well as monitoring blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Thermoreceptor cells detect temperature changes, both hot and cold. Nociceptors are a type of receptor that detects painful stimuli.

When a specific stimulus interacts with a receptor cell, it triggers a change in the cell's membrane potential, a process known as transduction. This change generates an electrical signal, which is then transmitted to other neurons, often through synapses. These signals are relayed through the nervous system to the brain or other processing centers, where they are interpreted as a particular sensation, such as seeing a color, hearing a sound, feeling an itch, or tasting a flavor. The specificity of receptor cells ensures that the correct sensory information is gathered and processed efficiently.
