Relaatioille is a concept used in mathematics, logic, and computer science to describe a relationship between elements of one or more sets. Broadly, a relation R between sets A and B is a subset of the Cartesian product A×B. When A equals B, R is called a binary relation on A. If a and b are elements such that (a,b) is in R, one writes aRb.

Relations can be characterized by properties that describe how elements relate to each other. A relation on a set A is reflexive if every element relates to itself (aRa for all a in A). It is symmetric if aRb implies bRa, and antisymmetric if aRb and bRa together imply a=b. Transitivity means that aRb and bRc imply aRc. These properties lead to important special cases: equivalence relations are reflexive, symmetric, and transitive, and they partition a set into equivalence classes. A partial order is reflexive, antisymmetric, and transitive, and a linear (total) order is a partial order with every pair of elements comparable.
