Rekombinációja, often referred to as recombination, is a fundamental biological process that occurs during sexual reproduction. It involves the shuffling of genetic material between homologous chromosomes. This shuffling leads to new combinations of alleles on a chromosome, creating genetic diversity within a population.

The primary mechanism of recombination is crossing over, which happens during meiosis, specifically in prophase I. Homologous chromosomes, one inherited from each parent, pair up. Segments of these chromosomes are then exchanged between them at points called chiasmata. This exchange breaks the linkage of alleles that were originally on the same chromosome, allowing for novel combinations to be passed on to offspring.

Another form of genetic recombination is independent assortment, which occurs during meiosis I. Homologous chromosome pairs align randomly at the metaphase plate. The orientation of each pair is independent of the others, meaning that maternal and paternal chromosomes can be distributed to daughter cells in a multitude of ways. This further contributes to the unique genetic makeup of gametes.

Recombination is crucial for evolution as it provides the raw material for natural selection. By generating new genetic variations, it increases the likelihood that some individuals in a population will possess traits that are advantageous in a changing environment. This adaptability is essential for the long-term survival of species. Without recombination, offspring would inherit nearly identical genetic material to their parents, limiting evolutionary potential.
