Rehunsäilöntäaine, commonly known as a silage additive, is a substance or mixture of substances added to forage at the time of ensiling to improve the fermentation process and preserve the nutritional quality of the silage. The primary goal of using a rehunsäilöntäaine is to ensure rapid and efficient lactic acid fermentation, which lowers the pH and inhibits the growth of undesirable microorganisms like clostridia and yeasts.

There are several types of rehunsäilöntäaine available. Inoculants, containing live lactic acid bacteria, are designed to introduce or boost the population of beneficial microbes. These bacteria convert soluble carbohydrates in the forage into lactic acid. Enzymes, such as cellulases and hemicellulases, can be added to break down plant cell walls, making more sugars available for bacterial fermentation and improving digestibility. Chemical additives, like organic acids (e.g., formic acid, propionic acid) or their salts, can also be used. These work by directly lowering the pH or by inhibiting microbial growth. Other additives might include urea to increase the nitrogen content and buffer the pH, or molasses as a source of readily fermentable sugars.
