Refraktsioonivõimed refer to the ability of an optical system to refract, or bend, light. This bending occurs when light passes from one medium to another with a different refractive index, such as from air to water or glass. The degree to which light is bent is determined by the refractive power of the material and the angle of incidence.

In lenses, refraktsioonivõimed are crucial for focusing light to form an image. A stronger lens will have a greater refractive power and can bend light more sharply, allowing it to focus light from a shorter distance. Conversely, a weaker lens bends light less and requires a longer distance to focus. This concept is quantified by dioptric power, measured in diopters. A lens with a power of +1 diopter converges parallel light rays to a focal point one meter away. Positive diopters indicate converging lenses (like those used to correct farsightedness), while negative diopters indicate diverging lenses (used to correct nearsightedness).

Refraktsioonivõimed are fundamental to the design of eyeglasses, telescopes, microscopes, and cameras, enabling them to manipulate light for various applications. The human eye also possesses refraktsioonivõimed, primarily through its cornea and lens, which focus light onto the retina to form vision. When these refraktsioonivõimed are not properly balanced, refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism occur, leading to blurred vision.
