REF2021 refers to the Research Excellence Framework 2021, the United Kingdom's system for assessing the quality of research in its universities and other higher education institutions. It is a periodic exercise, with REF2021 being the most recent completed iteration, following REF2014. The primary purpose of REF2021 was to inform the allocation of research funding by UK government departments.

The assessment process involved the submission of research outputs, impact case studies, and information about the research environment by eligible UK higher education institutions. These submissions were reviewed by expert panels composed of academics and users of research. The criteria for assessment included the quality of research outputs, their impact on society, the environment, and the economy, and the vitality and sustainability of the research environment.

The results of REF2021 were published in May 2022. They provide a benchmark for research quality across UK universities and are used by research councils and charities to inform their funding decisions. The exercise aims to ensure public money is spent effectively and to promote a high standard of research within the UK. REF2021 was managed by an organisation called Research England, on behalf of the four UK higher education funding bodies.
