Reenslavement refers to the act or process of returning individuals to a state of bondage or servitude after they have been freed or escaped from slavery. This can occur through various means, including capture, legal or quasi-legal mechanisms, or by creating conditions that effectively force individuals back into subservient labor.

Historically, reenslavement was a common practice in societies that practiced chattel slavery. After the abolition of slavery in many parts of the world, such as the United States, various measures were implemented that, in effect, led to reenslavement. For instance, vagrancy laws and chain gangs were used to arrest and sentence formerly enslaved people to forced labor, often on plantations or in mines, under conditions that mirrored slavery. This practice effectively circumvented the legal end of slavery by creating a new system of forced labor.

The concept of reenslavement also extends to modern forms of human trafficking and debt bondage, where individuals are coerced into exploitative labor that closely resembles historical slavery. In these contemporary contexts, individuals may be tricked, forced, or indebted into situations from which escape is extremely difficult, effectively trapping them in a state of servitude that can be considered a form of reenslavement. The term highlights the persistence of involuntary servitude even after its formal prohibition.
