Reeferkonttien, known in English as refrigerated shipping containers, are specialized cargo containers equipped with an integrated refrigeration unit and insulation to maintain a defined temperature during transport. They are used to move perishable goods such as fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, seafood, and some pharmaceuticals, across ships, trucks, and trains.

Construction and operation: The container walls are insulated with polyurethane foam between steel panels, and doors have seals to minimize heat exchange. A built-in refrigeration unit provides cooling and, in many models, heating as needed. The unit can be powered from the ship's electrical supply, shore power, or an on-board diesel generator when fixed power is unavailable.

Temperature control: Reefers maintain a user-set temperature within a broad range, typically from about -30°C to +25°C, depending on the model and cargo. Modern units include data logging and telematics to monitor temperature, door openings, and power consumption, with alarms if conditions fall outside set limits.

Sizes and use: The most common formats are 20-foot and 40-foot ISO containers, designed to fit standard intermodal equipment. They are used in intercontinental ocean freight, as well as road and rail transport, and can be employed in temporary cold storage at ports or warehouses.

Standards and safety: Reefers comply with international container standards for size, locking, and safety (such as ISO dimensions and CSC certification). They also conform to transport temperature regulations and may include remote monitoring systems to support cold-chain integrity.
