Redworms, scientifically known as Eisenia fetida, are a species of earthworm commonly used in vermicomposting. They are small, reddish-brown in color, and have a segmented body. Unlike some other earthworm species that burrow deep into the soil, redworms are epigeic, meaning they live in the top layers of organic matter. This characteristic makes them highly effective for composting as they thrive in nutrient-rich environments like compost bins.

Redworms are hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female reproductive organs. However, they still require a mate to reproduce. Their reproductive rate is rapid under favorable conditions, contributing to their efficiency in breaking down organic waste. They consume a wide variety of organic materials, including food scraps, shredded paper, and yard waste, converting them into nutrient-rich compost known as vermicast.

The primary habitat for redworms is decaying organic matter. In nature, they are found in leaf litter, rotting logs, and manure piles. Their domesticated counterparts are cultivated in controlled environments, such as plastic bins or wooden enclosures, specifically for composting purposes. Their ability to process large amounts of waste quickly and produce a valuable soil amendment has made them a popular choice for both home gardeners and commercial composting operations. Redworms are also sometimes used as bait for fishing.
