Rekdukciót, or redukció, is the Hungarian term for reduction, a broad concept referring to processes that make something smaller, simpler, or lower in intensity. The word, rooted in Latin reducere, is used across disciplines and everyday language. In scientific writing, reduction often denotes a change in which a substance gains electrons (a reduction reaction), but the term also appears in mathematics, linguistics, economics, and general usage to describe decreases in size, quantity, or degree.

In chemistry, reduction is a redox (oxidation–reduction) process where the oxidation state of a species decreases. A reducing agent donates electrons to another substance. Common examples include the reduction of metal oxides to metals in metallurgy (for example, iron oxide to iron using carbon monoxide) and organic reductions that convert carbonyl groups to alcohols with hydride reagents such as NaBH4 or LiAlH4. Redox chemistry is central to energy production, corrosion, and synthesis.

In mathematics and computer science, reduction denotes simplification or conversion to a simpler form. This includes reducing fractions to lowest terms, row reduction of matrices to row-echelon form, and various problem-transformations in algorithm design. In logic, reductio ad absurdum describes proving a statement false by assuming the opposite and reaching a contradiction, a conceptual form of reduction in reasoning.

Other uses include phonetic or morphological reduction in linguistics (sound weakening in connected speech) and practical applications such as price reductions or decreases in quantities. Across fields, redukció signals a downward change, conversion, or simplification from a more complex or higher state to a more fundamental one.
