Redokstitraukset, often referred to as redox titrations, are a type of chemical analysis used to determine the concentration of an unknown substance. This method relies on a redox reaction, a chemical reaction where oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously. In a redox titration, one reactant is the titrant, a solution of known concentration, and the other is the analyte, the substance whose concentration needs to be determined.

The principle behind redox titrations is the transfer of electrons between the titrant and the analyte. As the titrant is gradually added to the analyte, a reaction proceeds, and electrons are exchanged. The titration continues until the equivalence point is reached. This point signifies that the amount of titrant added is stoichiometrically equivalent to the amount of analyte present.

To detect the equivalence point, an indicator is typically used. Redox indicators are substances that change color when the redox potential of the solution shifts. This color change signals the completion of the reaction. Alternatively, a potentiometric method can be employed, where the potential difference is monitored using an electrode, and the equivalence point is identified by a sharp change in the potential reading.

Common examples of redox titrations include iodometry, permanganometry, and dichromatometry. These techniques are widely used in various fields, including pharmaceuticals, environmental monitoring, and food analysis, for quantifying substances like oxidizing agents, reducing agents, and certain metal ions. The accuracy of the results depends on precise control of the reaction conditions and the correct identification of the endpoint.
