Recyklace is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. This process is a key component of modern waste reduction and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy. It can prevent the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, lessen air pollution and water pollution by reducing the need for mining, logging and manufacturing, and also reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The types of materials that can be recycled include paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Each material requires specific processes to be effectively recycled. For example, paper recycling involves pulping the paper and then reforming it into new paper products. Plastic recycling is more complex due to the variety of plastic types and can involve shredding, melting, and reforming. Glass is typically crushed and melted down to create new glass items. Metal recycling, such as aluminum and steel, involves sorting, shredding, melting, and casting into new metal products.

The benefits of recycling are numerous. It conserves natural resources by reducing the need to extract virgin materials. It saves energy, as manufacturing products from recycled materials often requires less energy than producing them from raw materials. Recycling also reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, thereby decreasing land and air pollution. Furthermore, it can stimulate economic activity by creating jobs in collection, processing, and manufacturing industries.

Challenges in recycling include contamination of recyclable materials, the cost-effectiveness of certain recycling processes, and consumer participation.
