Reaktora is a term that appears in various languages with a general reference to a reactor, the device or facility where a process occurs under controlled conditions. In Polish, reaktora is the genitive singular of reaktor and appears in phrases such as “bezpieczeństwo reaktora” (the safety of the reactor). In English, the standard term is reactor.

A nuclear reactor is a device that sustains a controlled nuclear chain reaction to generate heat. The reactor core contains fuel assemblies in which fission occurs, a moderator to slow neutrons, control rods to adjust reactivity, and a coolant to remove heat. The heat is transferred to a secondary system to produce steam that drives turbines and generates electricity. Modern reactors employ multiple safety systems, robust containment structures, and regulatory oversight to prevent releases of radioactivity and to manage potential accidents.

Beyond nuclear applications, the term can also refer to chemical reactors, vessels where industrial chemical reactions take place. They may be batch or continuous, and can include catalysts, mixing, and temperature or pressure control. Research reactors, which are smaller facilities used for experiments, material testing, and isotope production, also fall under the broad notion of a reaktora in some contexts.

Historically, the development of practical reactors began in the mid-20th century, with early demonstrations of controlled fission and the first generation of commercial power reactors. Since then, reactor technology has evolved toward greater safety, efficiency, and modularity, shaping energy policy, scientific research, and industrial production.
