Radiomeetri refers to the measurement of radiant energy. This encompasses a broad range of electromagnetic radiation, from radio waves to gamma rays. The fundamental principle involves detecting the energy carried by photons and quantifying it. Various instruments, known as radiometers, are employed for this purpose, each designed to be sensitive to specific parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The applications of radiometry are diverse. In meteorology, it's used to measure the Earth's energy budget, monitor cloud cover, and assess solar radiation. In astronomy, radiometers are crucial for studying celestial objects by detecting the light and other radiation they emit. Industrial uses include quality control in manufacturing, where infrared radiometers can detect temperature anomalies in materials. The unit of radiant energy measurement in the International System of Units (SI) is the joule. However, radiometry often deals with power, which is energy per unit time, measured in watts. Different radiometers are calibrated to measure specific quantities, such as radiant flux (power emitted in all directions), radiant intensity (power per unit solid angle), or radiance (power per unit area per unit solid angle). The spectral distribution of the radiation is also frequently of interest, leading to instruments that can measure radiation within specific wavelength or frequency bands.
