Radioamatööriliikenne, often referred to as amateur radio or ham radio, is a hobby and public service that uses radio frequencies to communicate with other amateur radio operators around the world. It is a non-commercial, technical pursuit that allows individuals to experiment with radio technology, develop communication skills, and contribute to public safety communications.

Amateur radio operators, known as "hams," are licensed by government regulatory bodies, such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States or Traficom in Finland. Licensing requires passing an examination that tests knowledge of radio theory, operating procedures, and regulations. Different license classes offer varying privileges regarding frequencies and power levels.

The primary purpose of amateur radio is not for commercial gain or personal entertainment in the same way as broadcast radio. Instead, it emphasizes self-training, intercommunication, and technical investigation by amateurs. These operators can communicate locally, nationally, and internationally. They use a variety of communication modes, including voice (single sideband, FM), Morse code (CW), and digital modes that transmit data.

Amateur radio plays a vital role in emergency communications. When regular communication infrastructure is damaged or overwhelmed during natural disasters, hams often provide essential communication links for emergency responders and affected communities. They are trained to set up temporary communication networks and operate independently.

Beyond emergency services, amateur radio fosters a global community. Operators participate in "contests" to contact as many stations as possible, engage in "DXing" (long-distance communication), and build and experiment with their own radio equipment. It is a hobby that combines technical skill, global connectivity, and public service.
