Radioaktivitásáról is the Hungarian term for radioactivity. Radioactivity is the phenomenon where certain unstable atomic nuclei spontaneously transform, releasing energy in the form of radiation. This process occurs when the nucleus has an imbalance of protons and neutrons, making it energetically unfavorable. To achieve a more stable state, the nucleus emits particles or electromagnetic waves.

There are several types of radioactive decay. Alpha decay involves the emission of an alpha particle, which consists of two protons and two neutrons, essentially a helium nucleus. Beta decay occurs when a neutron in the nucleus converts into a proton, emitting an electron (beta-minus decay) or when a proton converts into a neutron, emitting a positron (beta-plus decay). Gamma decay is the emission of high-energy photons, often occurring after alpha or beta decay has already happened to further stabilize the nucleus.

The rate at which a radioactive substance decays is characterized by its half-life, which is the time it takes for half of the radioactive atoms in a sample to decay. Half-lives vary greatly, from fractions of a second to billions of years. Radioactivity has various applications, including medical imaging and treatment, industrial processes, and scientific research. However, it also poses health risks due to the ionizing nature of the radiation, which can damage living tissues. Therefore, strict safety protocols are necessary when handling radioactive materials.
