Radiaalnärv refers to the radial nerve, a major nerve that runs from the spine to the arm, playing a crucial role in human anatomy. It originates in the axilla, from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus, branching off from the spinal nerve C5 to Th1. The radial nerve is primarily responsible for innervating the extensor muscles of the arm and forearm, which enables extension and straightening of the elbow, wrist, and fingers.

The radial nerve is a mixed nerve, composed of both sensory and motor fibers. Its sensory fibers transmit information regarding touch, pressure, and proprioception (position and movement sense) from the skin and muscles of the forearm, while its motor fibers activate the extensor muscles, facilitating movement and stability. Furthermore, the radial nerve contributes to the innervation of the snuffbox, an area on the thumb side of the wrist, where several muscles and blood vessels are closely related.

Radial nerve palsy or damage can result in weakness or paralysis of the wrist and fingers, as well as sensory deficits in the forearm. Symptoms may include an inability to extend the wrist or fingers, reduced grip strength, and impaired sensation in the affected areas. Radial nerve injuries often occur due to compression or damage to the nerve, including fractures and overuse injuries.

Because of its significant functions, understanding and preserving the integrity of the radial nerve is essential for maintaining proper arm and hand function. Sports medicine professionals may focus on radial nerve care during the evaluation and treatment of golfers, tennis players, and other individuals who often engage in repetitive, high-impact arm activities.
