Radar is a detection system that uses radio waves to determine the range, angle, or velocity of objects. It can be used to detect aircraft, ships, spacecraft, motor vehicles, weather formations, and even terrain. The term radar is an acronym for RAdio Detection And Ranging.

Radar systems work by transmitting electromagnetic waves and then detecting the echoes that are reflected back from objects. The time it takes for the echo to return indicates the distance to the object. The direction of the transmitted wave determines the object's bearing, and the Doppler shift of the returning wave can be used to measure its radial velocity.

The basic components of a radar system include a transmitter, a receiver, an antenna, and a signal processor. The transmitter generates the radio waves, the antenna focuses these waves into a beam and also receives the reflected echoes, and the receiver amplifies and processes the weak echo signals. The signal processor interprets the received data to provide information about the target.

Radar technology has evolved significantly since its initial development, with advancements leading to improved resolution, range, and target discrimination. Different types of radar exist, such as pulsed radar, continuous-wave (CW) radar, and Doppler radar, each suited for specific applications. Radar is crucial in various fields, including air traffic control, meteorology, military surveillance, navigation, and automotive safety systems.
