Rättcensurerade is a Swedish term that translates to "right-censored" in English, commonly used in statistical contexts. It refers to a situation where the exact event of interest, such as a failure, death, or occurrence of a specific outcome, has not been observed for a subject by the end of the study period. Instead, the subject is known to have survived beyond a certain point in time, but their precise event time remains unknown.

This type of censoring is distinct from "left-censoring," where the event of interest is known to have occurred before a certain point in time, but the exact time is unknown. In right-censoring, the observed time is a lower bound for the true event time. For example, in a study investigating the lifespan of a particular component, if a component is still functioning at the time the study concludes, its lifespan is right-censored. Similarly, in a medical study tracking patient survival, a patient who is still alive at the end of the follow-up period is considered right-censored.

Statistical methods designed for survival analysis, such as Kaplan-Meier estimation and Cox proportional hazards models, are specifically developed to handle right-censored data. These methods allow researchers to estimate survival probabilities and hazard rates while accounting for the incomplete information provided by censored observations. Ignoring right-censored data or treating it as if the event occurred at the censoring time would lead to biased and inaccurate results.
