Quasimercenary is a term used in academic and journalistic discourse to describe combatants or armed groups who provide military or security services for pay but do not fit neatly into the category of a traditional mercenary or a formal national armed force. It is not a formal legal designation, but a descriptive label for a grey zone in contemporary warfare.

Characteristics typically include paid engagement and operation outside a conventional state command structure, with allegiance to a client or employer rather than to a country. Quasimercenaries may work through private security firms, private military companies, or irregular militias, and can comprise former soldiers, contractors, or local fighters who are compensated for their participation.

Compared with classic mercenaries, quasimercenaries may have explicit or implied institutional ties, such as being contracted by a government or multinational entity, or being embedded within a client’s broader security apparatus. The boundary between lawful security work and unlawful armed activity thus becomes blurred, complicating accountability and liability in conflict.

Discussions of quasimercenaries emphasize legal and ethical concerns surrounding the privatization of force, the risk of deniable operations, and difficulties in applying international humanitarian law to hybrid actors. The term appears most often in analyses of modern irregular warfare and the expanding role of private actors in armed conflict.
