Pölyisyydestä, known in English as dustiness or the state of being dusty, refers to the presence of fine, dry particles suspended in the air or settled on surfaces. These particles, collectively termed dust, can originate from a wide variety of sources. Natural sources include soil erosion, volcanic eruptions, and pollen from plants. Anthropogenic sources are numerous and significant, encompassing activities such as construction, demolition, agriculture, and industrial processes like manufacturing and mining.

The composition of dust is highly variable, depending on its origin. It can contain mineral fragments, organic matter, biological particles like bacteria and fungal spores, and even microscopic fibers. The size of dust particles ranges from very small, microscopic specks to larger, visible motes. Smaller particles, particularly those less than 10 micrometers in diameter, are of greater concern as they can be easily inhaled deep into the lungs.

The effects of dustiness can be manifold. In indoor environments, dust accumulation can detract from aesthetic appeal, contribute to allergies and respiratory problems for sensitive individuals, and can even damage sensitive electronic equipment. In outdoor environments, significant dustiness from sources like construction sites or arid regions can impair visibility, affect air quality, and have negative impacts on ecosystems. Controlling dustiness often involves measures such as dust suppression techniques, ventilation, and regular cleaning.
