Põllumajandusühistutes, or agricultural cooperatives, are member-owned businesses formed by farmers to collectively market their produce, purchase supplies, or provide shared services. The primary goal of these cooperatives is to enhance the economic viability and competitiveness of their member farmers. This is achieved through economies of scale, increased bargaining power, and shared resources, which can reduce individual costs for inputs like fertilizers, seeds, and machinery, as well as improve access to markets and distribution channels.

Cooperative structures vary, but common forms include marketing cooperatives, where members pool their products for sale; purchasing cooperatives, which buy supplies in bulk for members; and service cooperatives, which offer shared services such as processing, storage, or equipment rental. Membership in a põllumajandusühistu is voluntary, and members typically contribute capital and participate in decision-making, often on a one-member, one-vote basis. Profits are usually distributed among members based on their patronage or investment.

Historically, agricultural cooperatives have played a significant role in modernizing agriculture and supporting rural communities in many countries, including Estonia. They have been instrumental in facilitating the adoption of new technologies, improving product quality, and ensuring fair prices for farmers. The concept continues to be relevant in contemporary agriculture as farmers face challenges such as market volatility, climate change, and increasing production costs.
