Põhivärvide, or primary colors, are a set of colors that can be mixed together to create a wide range of other colors, but cannot be created by mixing other colors. The specific set of primary colors depends on the color model being used.

In the subtractive color model, which is used in pigments and printing, the primary colors are typically red, yellow, and blue. When these colors are mixed, they absorb different wavelengths of light. For example, mixing red and yellow produces orange, and mixing yellow and blue produces green. Mixing all three subtractive primary colors in equal proportions theoretically results in black, although in practice, it often produces a dark, muddy brown.

In the additive color model, used for light and digital displays, the primary colors are red, green, and blue (RGB). When these colors of light are combined, they add together. Mixing red and green light produces yellow, green and blue light produce cyan, and red and blue light produce magenta. Mixing all three additive primary colors of light at full intensity results in white light.

The concept of primary colors is fundamental to understanding color theory and has applications in art, design, and technology. The choice of primary colors significantly influences the gamut, or range of colors, that can be reproduced.
